Home/Green wall technical guide
A vertical green wall in Hong Kong fails or lasts based on sun, access and where the water goes — not on a mood board. HF Green uses the checks below to choose a live wall, an artificial wall or a mix. Design, installation and maintenance stay with our own team.
Call 5611 6867A west-facing external green wall and a north-facing one are different jobs. West and south façades take hard afternoon sun; live plants must tolerate heat and the irrigation zones cannot share a timer with a shaded wall. North walls and deep shade need shade-tolerant species or the wall thins out. Harbour and high-rise sites add typhoon load: fixings, corrosion and a post-storm inspection. Indoor living walls sit in air-conditioning and empty weekends; humidity crashes and live plants die. An artificial green wall is often the honest recommendation there. We record orientation, sun hours, wind and indoor or outdoor conditions before naming a plant.
A live vertical green wall uses modules or a growing medium. It can soften a microclimate, and it requires automated irrigation, drainage and green wall maintenance. An artificial or imitation-plant wall needs almost no water and suits dark interiors, light structural loads and heights nobody can reach. A mixed wall puts live plants at eye level and artificial plants above, which cuts gondola and scaffolding costs. The Tseung Kwan O estate wall is imitation planting that HF Green built. K11 MUSEA is maintenance only: HF Green did not build that wall. Blue Pool Road is maintenance. The Wan Chai Swire office and the Kwun Tong office are design plus ongoing care.
- ✓Live: irrigation, drainage, pruning, feeding, pest control, replacement
- ✓Artificial: fixings, fire performance of materials, dusting
- ✓Mixed: live below, artificial above, fewer high-access visits
Most live walls fail on water, not on the plant list. Zones must be separate so a west façade is not watered like a north façade. Drippers block; strong fertiliser burns roots. Drainage needs a path: module tray, collection gutter, then the building drain. Water must not track into the interior or drip onto a public footpath. HF Green maintenance always includes an irrigation performance check, clearing blockages, and replacing plants killed by drought or constant wetness. If the existing system is already dead, we say whether it needs new pipework or only a new schedule.
If every prune needs a gondola or full scaffold, the owner stops paying and the wall dies. Indoors, use removable modules and an access door. Outdoors at low level, use a step or platform. At height, ask whether the building's existing gondola rail can be shared before promising a live façade. Tower and mobile green walls keep plants at hand height. Mall exterior work has to fit trading hours and fire escape routes.
A green wall plus wet growing medium has weight. Concrete, steel and curtain wall take different fixings. HF Green installs the greening system, connects irrigation and sets the plants, and we flag load and fixing risks before quoting. Structural calculations, curtain-wall alterations, and rebuilding a roof or façade waterproofing membrane are not horticultural work. If the membrane has to come off, we send you to a registered contractor. We will not hide structural waterproofing inside a gardening contract.
A single price per square foot is not comparable. Cost moves with indoor versus outdoor, live versus artificial, area, whether irrigation is new, how hard access is, and the length of the maintenance term. The figure comes after a free site visit, not from a rate card.
One: inspect orientation, sun, wind, water supply, drainage and how a person reaches the wall. Two: recommend live, artificial or mixed, and write down the structural items we will not do. Three: issue scope, planting direction and a price. Four: our own crew installs and tests the water. Five: hand over a maintenance sheet — visit cycle, pruning, feeding, pests, replacement and irrigation checks. The same sequence is used for homes, companies, schools, malls and estates.
How different is outdoor and indoor green wall maintenance in Hong Kong?
Outdoor walls, especially west-facing, need closer visits, sun-based irrigation zones and a check after typhoons. Indoor walls fail from air-conditioning and nobody watering at weekends; visits can be less frequent but species must tolerate shade and dry air. Artificial walls are mostly dusting and fixing checks.
Can you build a live wall with no maintenance access?
Yes, and every later prune becomes expensive. Without a gondola or platform we usually recommend live plants only at hand height, artificial above, or a fully artificial wall.
Do you rebuild façade waterproofing?
No. Irrigation and the green wall's own drainage connections are in our scope. Membrane and structural alterations belong to a registered contractor, and they are quoted separately.
